Have you ever wondered just what technique your chiropractor is using to treat you? There are many treatment methods, with options for everyone, from children to adults and seniors, nervous about treatment or seasoned pros. Our chiropractors aim to reduce pain, improve function, and educate patients on how to account for their own health through exercise, ergonomics, and other therapies. Here's an overview of the majority of chiropractic treatment methods that we use here at Norfolk Chiropractic Wellness Centre:
1. Spinal Manipulation (Chiropractic Adjustment)
This is the most well-known chiropractic technique. It is a high-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA) thrust applied to misaligned spinal joints. Its purpose is to improve spinal motion and physical function, and reduce nerve irritability.
2. Spinal Mobilization
This is a gentler alternative to spinal manipulation. It uses low-force, slow movements to restore motion in the spine. This method is good for patients with osteoporosis, arthritis, or who are nervous about HVLA thrusts.
3. Flexion-Distraction Technique
Also known as lumbar traction, flexion-distraction is a non-thrusting spinal manipulation. It is performed on a specialized table that gently distracts and flexes the spine, relieving pressure and tension on the spinal discs. We use this technique to treat disc herniation, scoliosis, and spinal stenosis.
4. Drop Table Technique (Thompson Technique)
Our chiropractors use special tables with sections that drop slightly. The chiropractor applies a quick thrust as the table section drops, which aids the adjustment. The benefit of these tables is the reduction of force required for manipulation, which makes for a gentler adjustment.
5. Activator Method
The activator is a handheld spring-loaded device which delivers a low-force, high-speed impulse to the spine. It is used for patients preferring a gentle approach and is often used for elderly or pediatric patients.
6. Diversified Technique
The diversified technique is a common, broadly used manual adjustment method. Like the spinal manipulation it uses HVLA thrusts, but on various joints, not just the spine. The goal of this technique is to restore proper movement and alignment.
7. Soft Tissue Therapy
Soft tissue therapy methods include Myofascial release, trigger point therapy and massage. Adding these methods to your adjustment allows the chiropractor to address muscle tension, adhesions, and improve circulation.
8. Therapeutic Exercises and Stretching
Chiropractors often prescribe customized exercise routines, with the goal of strengthening muscles, improving range of motion, and preventing a recurrence of issues.
Each of these methods is selected for the patient based on their condition, comfort level and treatment goals. At your initial visit the chiropractor takes a medical history, completes a physical examination and engages in dialogue to determine which treatment methods will be most beneficial for you based on the information gathered.
